Top 5 Assclown Quotes in 2007

Ok,, I’m an apple fanboy, even if the only Apple products I own is a MacBook Pro and an iPhone 3GS, the only reason by my main Desktop is not a mac, well it’s cause the PC still is king for games. I found this link on Gizmodo that’s hilarious. It’s funny reading quotes slamming the iPhone when it was first announced 2 years back.

The iPhone has been an amazing success over the pass few years. And thats what I like about Apple, it’s a company that designs and builds products ‘they’ would like to own, revolutionising the industry and media sphere as they release stuff.

I thought redman042 said it best in the comments.

I think the real point here is, even though these guys knew Apple was a threat to their space but wouldn’t admit it publicly (of course), none of them could have foreseen the barnstorming success that the iPhone is today. Apple didn’t just change the smartphone industry, it drastically changed 3rd party app development, the music and movie industries, and now, even before the iTablet is a confirmed reality, the magazine industry is bending over backwards and spending millions to be ready for an unconfirmed, potentially nonexistent product. In a nutshell, the entire media world is begging to be Steve Job’s bitch.

Now THAT’s what I call running a tech company.

Streaming Local Radio On The iPhone

It seems that the licensing issue Mediacorp had with streaming radio content online has been resolved. It’s great for listeners as you can now listen to your fave stations on the iPhone. I for one am happy as I do like to listen to the morning shows on my way to work in the morning.

Got A 32 GB iPhone 3GS!!

photos-hardware-01-20090608.jpg

I got my 32GB iPhone 3GS (Black)!! It was kinda a last minute decision last Saturday night. Jas was teasing me and kept asking me if I was gonna get one. I was trying to keep away from temptation, but heck with it! So I got on the computer and did some quick research.

Via Jas’s Singtel plan, all we needed was to pay for the new phone via a recontract of her plan which came up to $508 + pay the up discounted upgrade fee of $300 as the plan was still in it’s first year after having bough the iPhone 3G last August. Thus, a total of $808 was to be paid. That’s a huge amount, and while Singtel was offering a trade-in amount of $400 for the iPhone 3G which meant paying $408 instead, that is still heaps to pay. So I quickly put up my iPhone 3G for sale one of the known local forums in SG. And 3 hours later, I sold the phone for $650! Woot! So off I went with Jas the next day to Singtel Comcentre and got the new 32GB iPhone 3GS for a sweet $158. Cheap cheap!

I’m loving the new phone and and already jailbreaked it. S really stands for speed. Apps load up much faster and surfing as well. It’s like going from a 386 to a 486. lol. The new camera is also a blast. The videos taken are pretty decent quality as well as some great macro shots. All in all, it’s worth the upgrade for me. But then again, I’m a bit of a tech geek. :P

And for those on Starhub that are wondering, you can use the directions as stated in my previous post to enable MMS & Tethering for your iPhone 3GS.

Activate MMS & Tethering On iPhone OS 3.0 for Starhub Users

I’ve tested this and it works like a charm. It uses a custom ipcc file that has been edited with Starhub settings. By right, M1 users can also try to edit their own ipcc files. An ipcc file is essentially a zip file, just rename the ipcc to zip, open it up and edit using a text editor the carrier.plist files with M1 settings.

UPDATE: This works for the iPhone 3GS as well.

StarHub users, follow the steps below to enable MMS & Tethering!

1. Connect iPhone to iTunes and backup your iPhone just to be safe. After backup, disconnect your iPhone.

2. Follow the instructions on how to enable carrier bundle support in iTunes 8.2. For Mac Users. For Windows Users

3. After enabling carrier bundle support, proceed to download the custom ipcc file here or here.

4. Start iTunes and connect your iPhone.

5. Option + Check for Update (Mac) or Shift + Check for Update (Win) and select the ipcc file to update.

6. iTunes will update your iPhone. You can go to Settings >> General >> Network >> Cellular Data Network and see ’shwapint’ as the APN for Cellular Data and ’shmms’ as the APN for MMS. Do not change these settings as Tethering will cease to work if you do.

7. Restart your iPhone and test MMS & Tethering! It should work!

Apple iPhone OS 3.0

title-20090608.gif

The new OS 3.0 comes out 17 June (taking into account time difference from US) in SG and I’m sure many iphone users are anticipating the new software. I’ve been using the Developers Release version of the software the past few days and I thought I’ll give my views. It’s basically the same as the public release.

Firstly, I just want to say, the new OS is worth upgrading to. It’s snappier, the phone really does feel smoother and the apps do not lag as much when loading. GPS also picks up your location much faster than before. It’s like a new phone! haha

There were initial rumours that MMS and tethering would only work with Singtel users, well, I can safely say that MMS works just as well on Starhub! Been MMSing heaps lately! :P So much easier on an iPhone. lol

IMG_0014.PNG

Some Starhub users may not see the MMS camera icon when you SMS after having just upgraded. I’m not sure if this will be the same for the public release but this is a fix that should enable MMS for Starhub and possibly M1 users.

Under Settings >> General >> Network >> Cellular Data Network, input your Starhub settings as below. M1 users can easily find out their MMS settings by calling M1 Customer service or via online. The settings are no different to those for other phones.

Cellular Data:
APN – shwapint
Username -
Password -

MMS
APN – shmms
Username -
Password -
MMSC – http://mms.starhubgee.com.sg:8002
MMS Proxy – 10.12.1.80

After entering the settings, it should look something like the visual below.

IMG_0012.PNG

You will also have to add your own mobile number under Settings >> Phone >> My Number.

IMG_0011.PNG

Lastly under Settings >> General >> Network, turn Data Roaming ON and OFF once. Then reboot the phone. The MMS Camera Icon should now appear when you SMS people.

There are heaps of nice new features in the new OS 3.0, most of which are plastered all over the web by now. So I won’t go through all of them. Just some nice new ones which I liked, first is sharing of contacts, you can now send contacts to other phones!

IMG_0013.PNG

And one I find real handy, is the ability to change iTunes accounts within the phone, instead of previously having to connect to iTunes to change accounts. Good for those which multiple accounts like me. I have a US and SG account.

IMG_0015.PNG

All in all, OS 3.0 is great. And I’m finding out small new features daily. Some are huge changes and some are small ones which makes the phone just that much better. So look forward to local SG 17 June where the new OS should be available for download! Woot!

Apple’s 2009 Worldwide Developers Conference

The 2009 WWDC didn’t really throw out the revolutionary iPhone upgrade that most of us were looking for, but it did have some pretty exciting news to look forward to.

overview-gallery1-20090608.png

First was the upgrades to the MacBook Pro lines. The 13′ inch MacBook was upgraded to the Pro line as well as upgrades to the 15′ inch lines. Making them faster and heaps more affordable. The 15′ inch MBP now has a 7 hr built in battery!! woot! Too bad my MBP is relatively new, SG$1,988 for the 13′ inch MBP is pretty damm good.

overview_hero20090608.jpg.jpeg

Mac OSX Snow Leopard was also previewed. This is what excited me heaps, the new OSX makes full use of 64-bit power with all the main apps in the OS being upgraded and redesigned to make full use of 64-bit as well as multicore computing. The new Quicktime X also looks pretty sexy. Built in Exchange support also is a thumbs up for the OS. Basically, everything runs heaps faster on this beast of an OS. The best thing, current OSX Leopard users get to upgrade to Snow Leopard by just parting with US$29 (SG$42)!!!! And it’s out in September! Windows 7? What’s that again?!?

title-20090608.gif

More info on the new iPhone OS 3.0 was also released. The earlier announcements at the beginning of the year promised an OS which would be like a new phone. And it continues to seem that way. MMS, Tethering, Safari upgrade, forwarding sms’s, bluetooth functions, and heaps more.

One thing I really liked was the new features for MobileMe subscribers, which I already am! There’s a new web based interface to find the location of an iPhone which has been lost. You can also remotely wipe the data in the device if the phone is unrecoverable! So when does this swanky new OS come out? Next week!! 17 June is OS 3.0 download day! Woot! I’m looking forward to it.

Lastly, the new iPhone 3GS. Ok, I wasn’t initially that interested in this upgrade. The phone is relatively the same externally and internally it’s not a revolutionary upgrade. But the more I read about it and well since I’m not on contract on my HP provider, well it’s getting really tempting.

The main thing about the new phone is the Speed, hence, iPhone 3GS. The phone now does everything that much faster, up to 2 – 3 times faster when launching apps, surfing, etc. That is a good plus point as the current iPhone is a tad bit sluggish. Other new features are voice control, 3MP Autofocus cam, video capture, support for 7.2Mbps HSDPA 3G, in-built digital compass and heaps more. And it comes in black or white, 16 or 32GB. I’m thinking more of the 32 GB. heh. Too early to decide if I’ll get it, 50 – 50 now. But the new processor and memory upgrade calls out too me! lol. Come 9 July when it comes out in SG, I’ll make my choice.

So thats it for this year’s WWDC. Nothing revolutionary, no Steve Jobs, but still pretty damm exciting. Apple continues to excel in creating top notch software and IT products. And the fact that they are increasing making their products affordable really helps. There’s heaps of stuff I left out, you can read more about the rest of the new features over at Apple.com.sg.

Wordpress iPhone App

My first post using the wordpress app from the iTunes app store! The wonders of 3G & the iPhone. I’ve been having a blast checking out the features n downloading apps. Sure, the iPhone has it’s shortcomings, but it really is multimedia convergence at it’s best! I’ll be hoping to use my iPhone during my ICT next week to check mail n surf. :)

Got it!

iPhone 3G Anticipation

Only slightly more than a day to the launch in Singapore. Got my collection email and will be joining in the fun on Thursday midnite. First time a phone has been launched like this in Singapore. Kudos to Singtel. There’s also this strange glass cube structure being built next to the ComCentre (location of midnite madness). Could this be for the launch? nice…… Some pics of the email and glass cube below. :)

If you wanna check out Singtel’s iPhone plans, here is the link.
