The Japanese really love their trains. And I mean really really.

Not only do they run one of the best and most efficient rail lines in the world, but they’re also passionate about their model trains. And this scale model was a sight to behold as we walked into the station for our train ride.

I couldn’t help but but some souvenirs for my nephew. Cute stuff.

But the main highlight of the day trip today was the Romantic Train ride. Yes, that’s what it’s called, ‘Romantic Train Ride’. I know some of you must be saying how original, but hey, it is a pretty romantic ride. Esspecially in the spring time when all the flowers are blooming. Winter also looks great from the pictures.

The train basically takes you on a journey between a few stations and back. You’ll pass by some beautiful scenery comprising of rivers, valleys, etc. You can also take the train one way and take the river boat cruise back. It looks really nice, but takes 3 hours of your life doing that. I must say this is a worthwide touristy thing to do while in Kyoto, check out more info here and here.

The train has 5 carriages, 4 of which are windowed and covered. While the 5th is open top, giving you the best view and experience. Be sure to ask for this carriage when purchasing your tickets. Though it could be pretty cold depending on which season you’re visiting.

The train makes a quick stop at the last station before making it’s way back to where you started.

Just a short walk from the Romantic Train station is the popular bamboo forest and Arashiyama area of Kyoto. A pretty fun and scenic place to visit. I just love walking along the streets as it’s so very different to what we have in Singapore.

But of course we had to stop for snacks along the way.

We visited the popular Togetsukyo Bridge. What a fantastic view! We had to have lunch just next to it. We found a small restaurant right next to the bridge and plonked ourselves down next to the window. Perfect scenery for a lunch.

Kyoto is home to quite a few World Cultural Heritage sites and we came across a few while walking around. The gardens were so well kept and very picturous. This was Tenryuji Temple, built in 1339, pretty old. :) You’ll have to pay to visit the temple, we didn’t bother as we’re not crash hot on temples.

We reached the bamboo forest shortly after the temple. I must say, while it’s nice, it’s a bit of a downer. The forest wasn’t anything special, there’s just heaps of bamboo! And some areas weren’t really very well pruned.

So that ended our day trip. While we were walking to the train station, we came across this small little house. Have a look at the front door. Yes, only for slim people. If you’re fat, don’t bother. :P

We ended our day in central Kyoto. Doing what we do best, eating. Words can’t describe how good the meal was. So just drool at the pictures. :)
