Tempura, one of my all time favourite Japanese foods. When done right, the crispy fried batter melts in your mouth together with the fish, prawn, squid of vegie that it’s fried with it. Yummm And of course, when in Japan, I had superb tempura!

One of the places I tried was this place in Akasuka. It apparently has been there for generations and it’s shiok! The location is not too far off from the main touristy street in Akasuka, along the old Tokyo parts. Akasuka is known to have some famous Tempura places, so do your research and check it out!

It was pretty exciting to see the tempura being cooked in front of us. Gotta love the oil!

Together with the tempura sauce and rice, it makes for a fabulous lunch. We had a great time pigging out to the tempura here.

My favourite place to eat tempura in Tokyo is at the Tenya chain of fast food restaurants. They have over 100 stores all over Tokyo and you’ll be able to find one in every major area in Tokyo. Just look out for their logo. And it’s cheap too!

Tenya has a huge variety of tempura combinations. They have the tempura bowls, tempura with soba or even just the fired tempura itself.

So why did I keep going back? Well everything is simply perfect! The fried batter, the sauce, the fresh ingredients! It’s so shiok a meal. For example, the tempura squid they served tasted and chewed more like fish than squid. When chewing down on squid, one would expect to find a bit of rubberiness, but no, it chewed through like fish! Apparently one has to cook the squid in the right temperature oil as well as batter to make the perfect combination. And it tastes pretty damm perfect to me!

So that’s a look at tempura in Tokyo. There are heaps of other restaurants that specialises in tempura, but remember you don’t have to spend heaps to enjoy good tempura. Happy eating!
