If there’s one thing I miss about living in Sydney, it’s got to be the great roasted or flame grilled chicken. There seemed to be a Red Rooster in every suburb in Sydney where you could get really great chicken, chips (with chicken salt!) and salad. For me, that could beat KFC any day! But even better was Oporto Chicken, a fast food joint that not only serves great chicken burgers, but fantastic Portuguese style chicken! They had a really great chilli marinade that just hit the spot!
Till now, back in Singapore, I still look out for great Portuguese chicken. I’ve yet to find a really really great place similar to Oporto, I’ve found 3 places so far in SG, but only two are worth patronizing in my opinion. The first is Barcelos, with outlets at Holland Village and Vivo City. I went to the Vivo outlet. The chicken is really nicely marinated and roasted. And the piri piri sauces they have are fantastic! Yum! Though the only drawback, is the expensive prices. I like the place, but will only really go back once in a blue moon due to the price.

The 2nd is Charcos, thats where the first pic and the pic above is from. It’s at Blk 608, Ang Mo Kio Ave 5. Easy to find, the place reminds me of a Red Roster in Australia, maybe because the owner is an Aussie. The setup and display all looks the same. They specialise in roasted chicken, in particular, their Portuguese roasted chicken. They also have a variety of salads, pork ribs and kebabs. I heard the ribs are pretty good. I found the Portuguese chicken not too bad. The sauce at the side wasn’t too bad too. Price wise, it was really reasonable. Cheap maybe. But for authentic Piri Piri chicken, I would say Barcelos, Charcos is really for good ol roasted chicken!
Lastly, is AJ’s Piri Piri chicken, it’s a chain from UK, and from what I know, have outlets in Ilumna and Sim Lim Square. I tired the Ilumna outlet and was really disappointed. The chicken was really normal roasted chicken with Piri Piri sauce poured over it. The chicken wasn’t roasted nicely and the sauce wasn’t great. Worst was the price wasn’t great too! haha,, so not a place I would go back to.

So there you go, my review of some of the places in SG known for it’s Portuguese chicken. I really hope someone brings in Oporto or even Nandos. KFC is great sometimes, but nothing beats a well roasted and marinated chicken! I’m hungry! Time for lunch!
